A cased Colt Model 1908 Vest Pocket .25 ACP, engraved
and signed by William H. Gough. Serial number 106082, signed
on the frame beneath the grip "DES & ENG BY W.H. GOUGH"
Colt medallion Type II checkered mother of pearl grips, the left
with gold inlaid monogram, "W M H". Engraved in
Gough's distinctive leafy style with lined background (which cuts through
markings and serial number, as was his practice with profuse
coverage). This pistol is the earliest known Colt signed by Gough
and may have served as his initial sample for Colt's. It is also the
earliest known Colt handgun signed by a factory engraver.
