1911A1 serial number 1066064 - One of 55,000 pistols manufactured in the
serial number range 1041405 to 1096404. On May 5, 1942, Union Switch &
Signal or Swissvale, PA entered into a contract to manufacture 200,000
pistols for the U.S. Government. In January, 1943, notice was given
that the contract was cancelled, which reduced the size of the contract to
30,000 pistols with terminal serial number 1071404. Due to a
production shortage, the government ordered an additional 25,000 pistols,
the last of which was shipped from the factory on November 27, 1943.

of Lt. Col. Robert C. Downey. After serial number 1060000, the
"P" proofmark is located on the left side of receiver and top of slide.
On this variation, the "P" should either exist in both places or should not
be present on both parts.
